New Photos Not Appearing in iPhone Camera Roll

Today my friend had an interesting iPhone bug. New photos she was taking in the iPhone Camera app were no longer showing up in her "Camera Roll" album, or anywhere in the Camera or Photos app. She could pull up the photos in Messages to attach them, but the Camera Roll photo album didn't seem to be populating with new photos anymore.
We tried force quitting the Camera app, but that didn't help. We finally fixed the problem by rebooting the iPhone.
