Tutorial for how to recover a forgotten Photo Vault PIN passcode.

A few months ago, we wrote a post about recovering a forgotten restrictions passcode. That got me thinking about other popular passcodes that don't have a built-in recovery mechanism. Then a customer emailed me that they forgot their Photo Vault passcode!

It turns out that the Photo Vault passcode is stored in the backed up preference files, and it's easy to get out of an iPhone/iPad/iPod backup.

The free trial of Decipher Backup Browser will allow you to recover your Photo Vault PIN. You don't need to purchase a license code to recover the Photo Vault passcode.

Download Decipher Backup Browser and make a backup of the iPhone with the Photo Vault PIN/passcode you need to get.

Read and follow these steps to recover your Photo Vault PIN passcode:

  1. Click on the backup of your iPhone in the left column of Decipher Backup Browser. If you don't see your iPhone in the left column, you'll need to make a backup of your iPhone in iTunes

  2. Select "Photo Vault Passcode" from the center column.

  3. Your Photo Vault PIN will show in the right column.

https://uploads.disquscdn.c... Hello Kelly,
Downloaded the browser. I even paid for it. This is for an iPad. I don't see the photo vault or photo vault pass code anywhere. Please see my picture.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the clarifying screenshot! That backup looks incomplete/unfinished or corrupt/broken unfortunately. Here's what I'd recommend:

1) If the backup is still going in iTunes (or was still going in iTunes) when you ran DBB, try DBB again now that the backup completed.

2) If the backup looks like it's finished in iTunes, we should delete or rename that backup and have iTunes make the backup again from scratch. There's steps for that on this page ("Corrupt Backup, Can't Back Up - Fix #2: Delete the old backup manually.") Be sure to wait for iTunes to finish making the backup before running Decipher Backup Browser. :)

Hi Haytham,

Are you referring to forgetting the iPhone backup password that Decipher Backup Browser is asking for? If so, this other article may be helpful!
